Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What aquarium range does the HMA-500s cover on Finnex’s table?
Finnex lists the 500 W HMA-500s for 100–120 US gallons, beginning where the HMA-300s band ends. The table’s footnote narrows the rating context to a standard enclosed aquarium with maximum heating capacity of ±8°F above ambient; it does not guarantee an outcome in a particular room. The existing matcher cannot enforce the 100-gallon floor.

Finnex gives the HMA family a 68–92°F control range and states ±2°F around the set value. Its page describes an analog controller but also calls the control electronic, leaving terminology unclear. These are not independent measurements; use an independent aquarium thermometer and verify the actual unit’s instructions.

The HMA family description expressly includes freshwater and saltwater aquariums and describes a titanium tube. It still does not supply the exact model’s full voltage/frequency, complete installation/manual requirements or a current SKU/UPC, so verify the exact offer instead of treating the family statement as a complete compatibility approval.
Explore this need in the finder →The top HMA capacity row
Finnex’s HMA family table lists the HMA-500s as a 500 W titanium aquarium heater with an amperage figure of 4.5 A at 115 V. The same row assigns it a 100–120 US-gallon band and the family control range of 68–92°F. This is the largest wattage on the inspected HMA table, but “largest in this table” should not be confused with universal coverage for every large aquarium or evidence that a higher wattage is better. The manufacturer’s capacity footnote refers to a standard enclosed tank and says its maximum heating capacity is ±8°F above ambient.
That footnote is especially important at this size: room temperature, cover, tank location and actual water volume can change heating demand. Finnex’s table is a broad sizing statement, not a guarantee for a particular cold-room or open-tank setup. This review does not independently test recovery time, temperature stability or power draw.
The 100–120-gallon band includes a lower boundary
The HMA-500s is not documented as “for anything up to 120 gallons.” Finnex lists 100 gallons as the lower endpoint. A 90-gallon tank is below the stated band, while 120 gallons is at its upper endpoint. The current finder only checks an upper capacity; it cannot reject volume below the manufacturer’s lower limit. As a result, the HMA-500s remains a reference-only entry rather than an active match or purchase recommendation. This prevents a technically easy-to-miss false positive for medium-sized tanks.
The adjacent HMA-300s row ends at 100 gallons, so the two published bands meet at that point. That does not establish which model should be used in a 100-gallon system. The chart does not give enough information to calculate heat losses for a specific environment, explain circulation requirements or account for a target species. Read the exact manual and tank conditions rather than selecting a wattage from the line alone.
Temperature control and material statements
Finnex lists 68–92°F and claims the line controls within ±2°F of the setting. The family overview calls the controller analog; descriptive copy also refers to electronic control. The HMA image shows a dial-like control and LED indicators but does not label the wattage. I report the stated range and retain the terminology ambiguity; I do not claim a digital display, resolution step or measured precision. The ±2°F is manufacturer language, not a laboratory result. A separate thermometer should be used to verify aquarium water.
The manufacturer describes a corrosion-resistant titanium heating tube and states that HMA heaters support freshwater and saltwater aquariums. It also says an encasing heater guard with suction cups is included. Those claims distinguish the HMA family in a source-based comparison, but they do not prove exact installation requirements for the 500 W unit. No HMA setup manual was listed on the current instruction index. Do not assume full submersion, placement direction, clearance or connection to filter plumbing from a photograph or family title alone.
Electrical and retail identity still need checking
The 4.5 A figure is explicitly tied to a 115 V reference; it is not the full rated voltage range or frequency, nor a substitute for checking the exact heater label and installation requirements. The reviewed manufacturer table gives no SKU, UPC, cord details, length, dimensions or retail package. Finnex’s separate shop collection displays other heater families and controllers but omits HMA from that one bounded collection; this does not prove the HMA-500s has been discontinued or cannot be found elsewhere. The general warranty page states a 180-day period for an original purchaser under normal use and excludes dry-burn damage, but the available sources do not bind that term to a specific current HMA-500s listing.
The manufacturer family photo shows one assembly without wattage identification, while the companion graphic shows controller/guard artwork. Neither is an exact HMA-500s package image. No smaller HMA, HMH, HMU, HMC or TH-series photo is used as a substitute. A seller’s exact model code, electrical label, return conditions and warranty statement should be inspected before treating an offer as this configuration.
Assessment for comparison shoppers
Finnex has documented a 500 W HMA row with a 100–120 US-gallon band, 68–92°F control range, a 4.5 A-at-115-V reference and family claims for titanium, guard, indicator and freshwater/saltwater use. The missing lower-bound support in the matcher is sufficient reason to keep it out of the live shortlist. The missing complete electrical and setup evidence adds a separate reason not to treat the article as installation approval. Use it to understand the exact HMA row and to create a checklist for a future offer, not as a promise that this unit is currently sold or suitable for a specific aquarium.
