Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Which HMU option is documented as 200 W?
The official Finnex Shop lists a 200 W HMU choice with SKU HMU-200S and its own Shopify variant ID. Its official variant barcode field is blank, so the UPC is unverified.
Explore this need in the finder →Does Finnex publish a tank-size range for HMU 200 W?
Not in the primary Shop record or the reviewed comparison chart. The chart gives a 100–500 W family span but no capacity band. Do not turn 200 W into a gallon recommendation; this variant remains reference-only.
Explore this need in the finder →What control range can be attributed to HMU 200 W?
Finnex’s comparison chart lists a shared 68–92°F HMU range for its 100–500 W span. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured water temperature; the product still lacks a supported tank capacity and setup.
Explore this need in the finder →Finnex HMU digital titanium series · 200 W · reference-only assessment
The official Finnex Shop record separates its 200 W option as SKU HMU-200S with a unique variant ID. The maker's comparison chart includes 200 W within the HMU family range of 100–500 W. That establishes a more powerful named configuration than HMU-100S, but not a gallon rating or real-world heating result. Because the primary sources do not connect HMU-200S to a supported aquarium-volume band, this page is deliberately a cautious reference rather than a recommendation.
Supported features and limits
The grouped product record describes the HMU as having a titanium tube, remote temperature sensor, digital controller/display with adjustable settings, flame-retardant guard and non-resumable out-of-water fuse. For the 100–500 W span, Finnex's comparison chart lists steel coil construction, push controls, digital display, 68–92°F adjustment, Japanese components and the same non-resumable fuse. These are manufacturer claims, not independent tests. The chart's range applies to the series span, not a measured output or a guarantee that the unit will maintain a target in an aquarium.
Why the middle wattage is not automatically the middle tank
Compared with the 100 W variant, HMU-200S has twice the named wattage; compared with the 300 W model it is lower. That numerical distinction is exact. What cannot be concluded is which water volume, ambient temperature or livestock situation makes either one appropriate. Finnex's chart contains no aquarium-size table for HMU. The Shop page and retrieved manual index also leave the complete supply voltage/frequency, model dimensions, exact water-type use, immersion/positioning requirements and operating instructions unresolved. A more powerful element can change heat delivery, but that does not substitute for a manufacturer rating or a controlled heating plan.
Buying and setup checks remain open
The current HMU page uses HMU naming and assigns a precise variant SKU even though its web address retains an HMX string; this is not recast as an HMX heater. No UPC appears in the official variant JSON. The current instructions index lists HMH, HMS and HPC documents, not HMU, so I do not borrow a related series manual. Nor do I use the generic gallery render as a photograph of the 200 W model: it carries no model or wattage label. Until an exact package and manual confirm volume range, electrical input, installation and water-type restrictions, this model remains reference-only, excluded from finder matches and central purchase pages. Keep an independent thermometer in the aquarium and verify actual water temperature rather than relying only on the controller display.
Evidence checked
The assessment uses the official Finnex HMU Shop record, its series comparison chart and the Finnex instructions index. It makes no ownership, test or measured-temperature claim.
