A useful fit for

A document-based reference for identifying the HPC-100's exact 100 W / 20–30 gallon row and 68–92°F digital adjustment range; it is not a finder recommendation.

The main tradeoff

The manual's 20-gallon minimum cannot be enforced by the current maximum-only volume question. The same glass heater body and generic image are shared across all three shop options, while full installation, freshwater/saltwater approval, exact electrical input and wattage-specific product imagery remain unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What aquarium range does Finnex list for the HPC-100?

The manual table gives the HPC-100 a 20–30 US-gallon water-volume band. The 30-gallon value is the upper screen in the finder; the 20-gallon lower endpoint is not enforceable in the current rule set, so this model remains a reference rather than a recommendation for smaller tanks. The page's capacity figure is not a promise of temperature performance in every room or setup.

Can the HPC-100 be adjusted to a chosen heater setting?

Finnex lists a 68–92°F control range for the HPC-100. Its family page describes a digital display and temperature adjustment button on the cord, but gives no numerical accuracy tolerance. Treat 78°F as a selected heater setting only, not as proof that the aquarium's measured water reaches that value or that it is appropriate for the animals.

What setup conditions should be checked before using the HPC-100?

Finnex says the HPC series must operate in water above 150 ppm TDS and instructs users to clean and verify the out-of-water sensor every 30 days. The inspected official page and downloaded PDF do not explicitly identify supported water types or establish a full submersion/orientation method. Do not treat the low-water cut-off as permission to run dry; confirm the package instructions for the aquarium and install route.

The Finnex HPC-100 is the smallest wattage in the current HPC glass-heater selector. This assessment is based on Finnex’s Shop variant record, its HPC series page and the linked specification PDF—not an ownership report or a hands-on test. The model code and Shop variant are specifically identified as HPC-100; the page-source record pairs that code with UPC 850006562244. That is more specific than the collection-card label, but it does not supply a full electrical label, an installation manual or a wattage-specific photograph.

Its own band is 20–30 gallons

The 2020 Finnex table lists 100 W, 0.90 A at a 115 V reference, a 20–30 gallon water-volume band, a 68–92°F control range and a 10.25-inch heater length. The 20-gallon floor matters as much as the 30-gallon ceiling when assessing the stated range: this is not simply a universal “up to 30 gallons” instruction. The current finder compares a chosen volume with the published maximum only. It cannot reject a tank below 20 gallons, so this review is kept out of matching rather than presenting a broad answer that could look suitable below the manufacturer's band.

Within the HPC family, the 100 W row is shorter and lower-powered than the 200 W and 300 W rows, but those neighboring configurations have materially different capacity bands. Do not substitute their length, power or limits for this model. A size chart also cannot promise that a particular tank will reach a target temperature: room conditions, circulation, cover and installation all affect the real system, and the manual does not specify a temperature-rise test or performance curve for this SKU.

Digital adjustment with a separate water sensor

Finnex describes the HPC as a 2 mm quartz-glass heater protected by a high-temperature-resistant guard. The family overview says a remote sensor in the aquarium reports temperature to a digital controller, while the display and adjustment button sit on the cord outside the tank. That separation can be useful for changing a setting without reaching into the aquarium, but the source does not describe the button's increment size or provide an independently measured control tolerance. Its “low variance” wording is a manufacturer claim, not a test result in this review.

The same sensor is described as an automatic power cut-off if water falls low enough to expose it to air. Finnex instructs owners to clean and check this sensor every 30 days and not to use the heater if it is inoperative. That protection does not mean the heater may be deliberately run dry, nor does it replace a separate thermometer for checking aquarium water. The overview also mentions memory protection for the temperature setting, but does not quantify what state is retained through every kind of power interruption.

Important setup limits remain unknown

One unusually concrete manufacturer condition is easy to miss: Finnex says the HPC series must operate in water with a total-dissolved-solids reading above 150 ppm. That is a strict “above” condition, not a claim that any water chemistry is suitable. The source material inspected here does not explicitly name freshwater or saltwater approval, so neither is assumed from the aquarium-heater label alone. Finnex's page describes the heater sensor as being in the aquarium and the controller as outside it, but the downloaded PDF is only a model table. It does not settle full immersion, orientation, installation depth, clearance, or inline-filter use. If one of those is essential, check the exact package instructions before treating the HPC-100 as a fit.

The manual's amperage heading is “Amperage (115V).” That gives context for the listed 0.90 A, not a complete 115–120 V / 60 Hz rating. Voltage range, frequency, plug and certification were not established in these sources. The shop variant record confirms a model code and UPC; it does not resolve those missing electrical details.

Who should keep this assessment in view?

The HPC-100 is most useful here as a clearly identified reference for someone comparing a modest-capacity digital glass design: the source row is 100 W, 20–30 gallons and 10.25 inches, with a 68–92°F adjustment range. A buyer who needs the finder to enforce a minimum tank volume, explicit marine/freshwater approval, a documented fully submersible route, or a truly shatterproof body should not rely on this page as confirmation. Although the heater is guarded glass, Finnex does not call the body shatterproof; guard presence and impact resistance are separate questions.

The current Finnex Shop imagery is shared between all three wattages and the photographed heater marking does not distinguish the 100 W version. No exact model image is shown here as though it proved a particular size. The key checks are the label HPC-100, its 100 W rating and UPC 850006562244; the 20–30 gallon band; the 68–92°F control limits; the above-150-ppm TDS requirement; sensor maintenance; and the actual package instructions for the intended installation. This is a source-based assessment of what is and is not established, not a claim that the heater has been measured in use.
